about

Coal Mine. All proceeds going towards the Bushfire Disaster Appeal.

My protest song.

I wasn’t going to release this song as a single.

The last couple of days, however, have brought up the same emotions in me as when I wrote it. Maybe you might connect with it too.

I wrote this song at a time when I felt sad and angry and overwhelmed about the decisions Australia’s political leaders were making.
Australia’s stagnation and conservatism on issues like climate change and refugees made me feel physically ill. I was in Berlin at the time, and through the European lens our politics felt selfish and unfathomable. I felt misrepresented and ashamed.

Right now, I’m in Sydney. Our country is on fire. I feel sad and helpless. I feel misrepresented and ashamed about the federal government’s lack of leadership.

I’d like to release this song now. I’m releasing it for anyone who feels scared. For anyone grieving. For anyone giving up their time and energy and bodies and lives fighting to protect others. For anyone who believes that we deserve better treatment than what we’re getting.

All proceeds from the sale of this song on my Bandcamp account will go to the Bushfire Disaster Appeal.

This is Coal Mine.

lyrics

Lyrics:

(Scott Morrison): You have been told a lie. They have taken advantage of you. You should tell anyone else you know, that they should not do it. Or they’ll find themselves in a similar circumstance, or much, much worse.

All those children

Bitter and wintered

I can’t keep my hatred in

It’s better at the coal mine

Come across your wet field
With mud on your dress hem

Lining up in single file

Convicted at the coal mine

Sent by the seasons

They pick Eden, you pick jail

We peak before the leaves decay

Decaying at the coal mine

Even in the springtime

And even in the desert

All your aquifers bubble and hiss

There’s panic at the coal mine

All God’s children
Taken by the ocean

Wrapped in cloth and lanolin

Never saw the coastline

Praying for rain

Won’t happen again
